[82] Ray Rodriguez: Welcome, everyone. I wanted to call this meeting to order is the Newark Unified School District Board of Education special board meeting for October 7, 2019. Ms. Aquino, roll call, please.
[101] SPEAKER_17: President Rodriguez.
[102] Ray Rodriguez: Here.
[103] SPEAKER_17: Vice President Martinez. Here. Member Gutierrez. Here. Member John. Here. Member Nguyen.
[111] Ray Rodriguez: OK. I'm in board docs and so we're in the meeting. So now we get to the agenda on the approval. I just wanted to say something before we do that. And then I'll need a motion and a second unless anyone wants to make any changes. The items that are on the agenda tonight are not action items. we're going to have a. Basically study item so we we have in the board workshop and the what we have a closed session we just have the one item conference with labor negotiator. Concerning our 2. Unions NTA and CSCA and the negotiations that are going on right now between the school The item, the facility budget alignment, that's a study session. We will have probably comment before that study session. But again, this is not an action item. But at any time, the board naturally can give directions to the superintendent or the staff. And then we can probably bring that back at the next regular meeting, which is October the 17th. I just had a procedure done over at Kaiser. I don't know if I'll be able to last throughout the whole thing, but I will try to stay as long as possible, especially through closed session and hopefully as much as open session as possible. OK. OK. With that, we get to the approval of the agenda. Any questions? Anybody want to offer some changes or amendments or anything? OK. So I need a motion and a second to approve the agenda as it is.
[228] Nancy Thomas: I move that we approve the agenda as is.
[231] Ray Rodriguez: I second. Please vote. Okay. That's okay. We'll clear and do it again. Not a big deal. motion passes 5 ayes. Now we move to public comment before we go to closed session as I stated in closed session we're going You're our new photographer, huh? That's why you're taking pictures.
[293] Rachel Bloom: Hi, my name is Rachel Bloom. I'm the science resource teacher at Graham and Schilling this year. I wanted to encourage you to remember and to keep in mind that Newark students deserve the best. So while you're talking to the folks about labor negotiations, keep that in mind. I know you will. a lot of teachers are getting ready for retirement. We always have openings. And so we're going to need to get new teachers to join our district. And so when a new young teacher is looking around, they look at nearby districts. And so we need to keep that in mind in order for us to recruit and retain the best teachers because we want our students to have the best. So thank you.
[338] Ray Rodriguez: And I want to say, Ms. Bloom, that how much I know from the kids, how much the kids love you and what a great job you're doing as our science teacher. Thank you. Anyone else? Okay. So now we recess to closed session at 610 and we should be out hopefully before 7.
